The best things to do in Hvar Croatia
In this guide I’ll be sharing the best things to do in Hvar, Croatia – one of my favourites places I’ve travelled to so far. Hvar is a magical little island in the Adriatic Sea, close to the city of Split. Known for its beautiful scenery, historic old town and vibrant nightlife, Hvar offers something for everyone. So whether you’re – like me – looking for a chilled getaway, or you’re after more of a party vibe, I’m sure that you’ll love Hvar either way.
The best things to do in Hvar
1. Explore Hvar Town
Exploring Hvar Town is top of my list of the best things to do in Hvar. If you’re getting the ferry from Split, you’ll be dropped off at Hvar Port in Hvar Town and it’s the perfect place to start.
You can stroll along the beautiful palm tree lined promenade, then stop for a drink at one of the waterfront bars. Next explore the cute cobbled side streets and alleyways, filled with cafes, boutiques and restaurants. Then head to the iconic Hvar Fortress (Fortica), perched high above the town. You have to climb up some pretty steep steps to get there, but the panoramic views of the town, the harbour, and the Pakleni Islands make it totally worth it. The fortress itself – built in the 16th century – houses a small museum showcasing ancient artefacts.
Back in Hvar Town, don’t miss the historic Cathedral of St. Stephen. The surrounding square – Pjaca – is another lovely place to stop for a drink and relax & soak up the beautiful surroundings. Nearby, you’ll find the Franciscan Monastery, home to a museum and beautiful gardens.
2. Visit the Pakleni Islands
Just off the coast of Hvar Town lie the Pakleni Islands, a collection of small, unspoiled islands known for their secluded beaches and crystal-clear waters. These islands are a dream for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Rent a boat or join a tour to explore the various islands, each offering its own unique charm.
Jerolim, Stipanska, and Palmizana are among the most popular spots. Jerolim is famous for its naturist beaches, while Stipanska is known for Carpe Diem Beach, a lively spot with beach bars and a vibrant nightlife scene. Palmizana, is perfect if you want somewhere to chill, with its lush botanical garden and serene beaches.
3. Discover Stari Grad
Stari Grad in Hvar is one of the oldest towns in Europe, dating back to 384 BC. This UNESCO World Heritage site is filled with history and culture, and has lovely beaches and traditional taverns.
As well as relaxing on the beach and tasting the local cuisine, in Stari Grad you can visit the Stari Grad Plain. This agricultural landscape dating from the Greek period has ancient stone walls and paths, as well as vineyards and olive groves that have been cultivated for over 2,400 years. For a really lovely experience you can book a traditional Hvar dinner or cooking class on the Stari Grad Plain.
How to get to Stari Grad from Hvar Town – Stari Grad is just under 30 minutes by car from Hvar Town. You can hop in uber, or rent a car while you’re on the island.
4. Relax on Dubovica Beach
Dubovica Beach, located just a short drive from Hvar Town, is one of the island’s most picturesque beaches. This pebble beach, nestled in a secluded bay, is perfect for a relaxing day by the sea. The crystal-clear waters – surrounded by cliffs – are ideal for swimming and snorkelling.
The beach makes a lovely peaceful escape from the busier areas in Hvar.
5. Enjoy the local cuisine
No trip to Hvar would be complete without trying some of the local cuisine. The food scene in Hvar is a great mix of Mediterranean and Dalmatian flavours, with lots of fresh seafood and local produce.
For a lovely authentic experience, visit one of Hvar’s many konobas (traditional taverns). Konoba Menego, located in a 15th-century house in Hvar Town, is a favourite among both locals and visitors. Here, you can try dishes like gregada (a traditional fish stew) and peka (meat or seafood cooked under a bell-shaped lid).
For seafood lovers, Dalmatino in Hvar Town is a must-visit. This family-run restaurant is known for its delicious fresh fish and seafood dishes, as well as its friendly atmosphere. Pair your meal with a glass of local wine from the island’s vineyards for the perfect dinner out in Hvar.
6. Sip coffee at a local coffee shop
Hvar is dotted with great little coffee shops & cafes, whether you’re looking for a morning caffeine fix or a little afternoon break, you’ll find the perfect spot to enjoy your coffee.
Coffee lovers should make to visit Coffee Snob & kvar37 – both serving up seriously good coffee in a very aesthetic setting.
Some other great spots to try are – Cafe Pjaca, a historic cafe located in Hvar Town’s main square; Cafe Nautica, on the waterfront, where you can sip your coffee while enjoying panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea and the Pakleni Islands and Nonica, a cosy cafe and bakery.
7. Explore the Lavender Fields
Hvar is often called the “Island of Lavender,” due to its stunning lavender fields. If you want to see the lavender in full bloom, the best time to visit is late June or early July
The village of Brusje, located on the hills above Hvar Town, is one of the best places to see the lavender fields. You can take a leisurely walk through the fields and you’ll be surrounded by lavender. You can also book Hvar lavender tour that includes photo stops, guided tours and traditional Dalmation dessert.
8. Enjoy the Nightlife
Hvar is famous for its vibrant nightlife – whether you’re looking for a laid-back beach bar or something more lively, you’ll find plenty of fun options on the island
Carpe Diem Beach, located on the Pakleni Islands, is also a super popular spot. During the day, it’s a beach club where you can relax and enjoy the sun and then at night it has a lively party atmosphere.
For a great beach bar experience, head to Hula Hula Beach Bar, just a short walk from Hvar Town. Hula Hula beach bar is known for its sunset parties, where you can enjoy a cocktail while watching the sun set over the Adriatic Sea. If you’re looking for a cosier setting, Kiva Bar, located in a narrow alley in Hvar Town, is also a great little spot for drinks and good music.
9. Take a Day Trip to Vis Island
For one of the best day trips from Hvar, head to Vis Island – located just a short ferry ride away. Vis is known for its unspoiled natural beauty, crystal-clear waters, and charming villages.
One of the highlights of Vis is the Blue Cave (Modra Špilja), located on the nearby island of Biševo. This stunning sea cave is famous for its glowing blue waters, which are illuminated by the sun’s rays. The best time to visit is in the late morning, when the light is at its most vibrant.
Back on Vis Island, explore the historic town of Vis, with its cute stone houses and narrow streets. Also don’t miss the opportunity to visit the island’s vineyards and sample the local wines, which are among the best in Croatia.
Where to stay in Hvar
I stayed at Agata House Hvar and it was a perfect place to stay in Hvar. It’s a super cute little studio perfectly located in Hvar Old Town. The studio has a super comfy bed, great aircon and dreamy views over Hvar Old Town.
If Agata House Hvar isn’t available next time I visit the Successus Old Town House apartments would be next on my list to try.
Looking for a bit more of a luxury hotel vibe in Hvar? River Marina Hvar Hotel, Beach Bay Hvar Hotel, Heritage Hotel Park Hvar and Adriana Hvar Spa Hotel are all gorgeous, super centrally located Hvar hotels.
