The best things to do in Split Croatia

I’ve just returned from an amazing trip to Croatia and wanted to share what I think are all the best things to do in Split Croatia. One of the most beautiful cities in Europe – if you haven’t visited already – you should definitely add Split to your travel bucket list!

Split is the second-largest city in Croatia and is full of history, culture and natural beauty. Nestled on the Dalmatian coast, Split offers a perfect mix of ancient architecture, stunning coastline and buzzing city life.

The best things to do in Split Croatia

1. Explore Split Old Town

Split’s Old Town is a magical little maze of historic streets, filled with lively cafes, shops, restaurants and bars. If you want to capture some great photos of the Old Town (without tourists in!) it’s best to go exploring as early in the morning as you can. From mid-morning the city starts getting much busier – is has a great buzz to it, but you also have to be patient waiting to get past people through the little alleyways of the old town!

In the evening the Old Town has a great atmosphere and is full of people out enjoying food and drinks in the many bars and restaurants.

2. Visit Diocletian’s Palace

If you’re visiting Split, then Diocletian’s Palace should definitely be on your list. These impressive remains of an original Roman palace and UNESCO world heritage site are free to explore. Built in the 4th century AD by the Roman Emperor Diocletian, the sprawling palace forms much of Split’s Old Town.

As with all of Split’s Old Town to see Diocletian’s Palace at it’s best when not super busy with tourists, I’d recommend visiting as early in the day as you can. Or if you’d like the opportunity to learn more about the palace while you’re exploring, as well as get a guided tour of the most beautiful places in Split’s old town you can book a guided walking tour.

3. Relax on the Riva Promenade

Wander through the old town to the seafront and you’ll Split’s beautiful Riva promenade. The promenade is lined with palm trees, as well as cafes, bars and restaurants. If you don’t want to stop for a drink there are plenty of benches you can sit on to relax and enjoy the relaxing waterfront views.

4. Book a wine tasting

If you’re a wine lover, Split has some lovely wine tasting experiences you can book. This wine tasting in a wine shop in the heart of Split includes carefully curated wines paired with artisanal cheeses & charcuterie. You can even book a wine tasting in Diocletian’s Palace – where you’ll be served local wines and traditional Dalmatian snacks.

5. Eat amazing gelato at Ela’s Gelateria

While I was in Croatia I ate probably the best ice cream of my life (would happily go back on that reason alone.) My favourite ice cream place in Split was Ela’s Gelateria – a cute little artisan gelato shop in Split’s old town. I highly recommend you stop by and treat yourself to a scoop (or several!)

6. Go island hopping

The best things to do in Split Croatia

As well as being an incredible place to visit on its own, one of the best things about Split is its close proximity to some of Croatia’s most beautiful islands.

From Split you can easily visit islands like Hvar, known for its nightlife and lavender fields, or Brač, home to the famous Zlatni Rat beach. Each island has its own unique charm and offers a range of activities, from beach hopping to exploring charming villages.

You can book some lovely island hopping day trips from Split, like this 5 island speedboat tour

7. Visit Trogir

Trogir is a lovely historic coastal town, just a short drive or bus ride from Split. With its well-preserved medieval architecture and charming streets, it makes a perfect day trip from Split. You can explore the historic center, visit the Cathedral of St. Lawrence, and stroll along the waterfront promenade.

I found buses the easiest (and definitely budget friendliest) way to get around Croatia. You can book bus tickets in advance here.

8. Book a food tour

One of the most fun things to do in Split is book a food tour. These guided tours take you to local markets, family-owned restaurants, and hidden gems where you can sample traditional Dalmatian cuisine. You can try dishes like peka, a slow-cooked meat and vegetable dish and fresh seafood straight from the ocean. A food tour is an excellent way to discover the culinary heritage of Split and enjoy a variety of delicious dishes.

This small group food tour is a great very reasonably priced option that takes you through local markets, bakeries, restaurants and bars. Or you could combine your food tour with a day trip to one of Croatia’s prettiest national parks with this Krka Waterfalls, food & wine tasting tour.

9. Visit Hvar

Hvar – one of Croatia’s best islands, is just a short ferry ride from Split. This beautiful island – known for its historic old town, stunning waterfront, great nightlife and sparkly sea – is one of my favourite places I’ve visited. In Hvar you can explore the charming old town, visit the medieval fortress for panoramic views, and then relax on the beach or in a waterfront bar. I’d recommend booking your ferry tickets for the best prices and to make sure they’re not sold out on the day.

Where to stay in Split

If you want to stay right in the heart of the old town, Central Square Heritage Hotel is lovely and perfectly located. Or treat yourself to a stay at Heritage Hotel Antique Split – a beautiful hotel with Diocletian Palace’s walls.

Or for budget friendly options in Split Old Town – Morei Historical and Abokamento Boutique Rooms are both offer great value, stylish & cosy rooms in the heart of Split.

If you prefer to stay in a quieter area a bit outside of the centre, Dioklecijan Hotel & Residence is a stunning hotel with a rooftop pool & hot tub.
